MISSION & SCOPE
The UCSF Medical Staff Services Office (MSSO) develops, manages, performs, and directly supports governance, and credentialing and privileging activities related to nearly 2,500 Medical Staff and Advanced Health Practitioner (AHP) members at UCSF Medical Center, and hundreds of other providers who rely on the MSSO’s electronic and paperless credentialing program - UC Me.
 
The service scope of the MSSO includes:
Supports the UCSF organized Medical Staff leadership and committees by providing expert consultation and ensuring its leaders and members adhere to the UCSF Medical Staff Bylaws, Rules and Regulations, and all pertinent policies.
Responsible for remaining current and complying with all state, federal, health plan, and non-federal national regulations and requirements.
Ensures that all Medical Staff and AHP members are properly vetted according to the requirements of the Medical Staff Bylaws, The Joint Commission, State of California, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), and other regulatory requirements by providing primary-source and accurate verification services.
Providing credentialing verification services (CVO) to UCSF provider groups and other affiliated medical groups.
Facilitate and support the electronic Ongoing Professional Practice Evaluation (eOPPE), and Focused Professional Practice Evaluation (FPPE) programs of the Medical Staff and AHP Staff.

Michael Gropper, MD, PhD, FCCM

Dr. Gropper is currently a Professor and the Executive Vice-Chair of the Department of Anesthesia; and Director of Critical Care Medicine at University of California, San Francisco.  He served as Chair for Medical Quality at UCSF Medical Center from 2002 to 2008.

 

Dr. Gropper has a longstanding interest in improving outcomes in critically ill patients and has spearheaded successful efforts to reduce hospital-acquired infections in the ICU, especially catheter-related bloodstream infections and ventilator-associated pneumonia. His research interests are in the area of respiratory failure, severe sepsis, and transfusion medicine. He has received National Institute of Health funding for these projects.

 

Dr. Gropper graduated from University of California, Los Angeles, School of Medicine. Following his residency in Anesthesia at UCSF he completed a fellowship in Critical Care Medicine also at UCSF.   He is board certified in anesthesia and was awarded special qualification in critical care medicine.

His work has been published widely, and he speaks nationally and internationally on critical care medicine.  Dr. Gropper focuses on public reporting and awareness of quality improvement, pay for performance in critical care and ventilator-associated pneumonia.

Wade S. Smith, MD, PhD

Professor, Department of Neurology

Dr. Wade Smith is currently a Professor of Clinical Neurology and director of the UCSF Neurovascular Service, specializing in stroke prevention, the management of acute stroke, critical care medicine, cerebral blood-flow monitoring with transcranial Doppler techniques and the medical management of patients after stroke. As a neurointensivist trained in both critical care and neurology, he directs the UCSF Neurological Intensive Care Unit, a 16-bed ICU dedicated to the care and resuscitation of patients with neurological injury. Many of the patients he evaluates are referred for a second or third opinion, but he also sees patients on primary referral. In addition to his clinical duties, Dr. Smith chairs the UCSF Medical Staff Credentials Committee, and was the founding chairman of the Committee on Professionalism.

 

Dr. Smith earned a medical degree along with a doctorate in neurophysiology from the University of Washington. He completed a residency as well as a fellowship in critical care medicine at the University of California, San Francisco.

Joshua Adler, MD

Professor, Department of Medicine

Dr. Joshua Adler is the Chief Medical Officer of UCSF Medical Center and UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital and medical director of UCSF Ambulatory Care. As Chief Medical Officer, he directs the doctors who provide patient care at UCSF and oversees the quality of medical services and the integration of patient care, education and research. He also oversees care coordination, clinical resource management, compliance, medical staff affairs, quality assurance and risk management. As ambulatory care medical director, he is in charge of UCSF's more than 90 clinics.

 

Dr. Adler, a practicing internist and a professor of clinical medicine at UCSF, directs the UCSF Pathways to Discovery Program, which fosters scientific, leadership and advocacy skills among all UCSF trainees. He earned a medical degree at UC San Diego Medical School and completed a residency in internal medicine at UC San Francisco, followed by a chief resident year at the San Francisco VA Medical Center. In the VA system, he served as assistant chief of medicine, assistant chief of staff and chief medical officer of the six-hospital Sierra Pacific VA Network. At the San Francisco VA, he directed the implementation of an electronic medical information system.
